Norman Rockwell’s original Stockbridge studio

Dubbed “King of Cartoons” by Newsweek magazine, William Steig was a true American master of comic art as well as best-selling illustrated books such as Caldecottwinning Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and Shrek!, which has been adapted into a highly successful animated movie series and a Broadway play. This unique exhibition explores the breadth of Steig’s inspired career from his earliest New Yorker cartoons to his buoyant magazine covers and brilliantly funny reflections on man’s everyday struggles, foibles and matters of the heart. Norman Rockwell Museum Deputy Director Stephanie Haboush Plunkett notes, “He was a gifted draftsman with an exceptional ability to communicate universally understood concepts in a single image.”

Accompanying the artist’s work will be a collection of three-dimensional sculptures and assemblages created by Jeanne Steig, a gifted artist and author, and William Steig’s wife of 35 years. The installation reveals the joys of their creative co-habitation and the emergence of themes in both artists’ work that speaks to their shared vision.

This amazing exhibition is drawn from an impressive collection of more than 800 original artworks spanning William Steig’s seven-decade career that has been donated to the Museum’s permanent collection of illustration art by Jeanne Steig. Chairman of the Norman Rockwell Museum’s Board of Trustees, Thomas L Pulling, states, “Steig was a master observer of daily life and human interrelations, and this art complements those same qualities in our Rockwell collections. Jeannie Steig reflects, “William Steig made me laugh, too. His drawings – which he sometimes referred to as doodles – offered an endless, tender commentary on life in the city. They will make a perfect pairing with the work of Norman Rockwell – equally tender and observant – of life in a small town.”

Beautifully situated with lovely views and walking paths, a visit to the Rockwell Museum is an uplifting experience. It’s changing exhibitions and permanent collections present an illustrated chronicle of American life and showcase our nation’s ideals of kindness, tolerance, democracy
and freedom, as interpreted through Norman Rockwell’s spirit, wisdom and gentle humor – an unforgettable experience.
